Location

Pietermaritzburg, South Africa

Medium: Painted wood.

- This wing echoes something that has been imprinted on my psyche ever since my early childhood: the wing of an RAF Spitfire with its characteristic insignia still intact! How or why this wing came to be in our neighbour’s backyard I will never know but it certainly set my imagination in overwind back then and has continued to inspire me to this day!

- The title was penned by Lindegren (spl?) And here serves to create a mystique around this sculpture. The quote seems to epitomise the restless, relentless nature of the artist: a winged desire that is a perpetual quest to go beyond the mundane!

- In the realm of art and the imagination the impossible comes into play: note that the bird’s leg with its claw clutching a propeller that has a glove on it!

- This glove seems to emphasise the fact that we cannot fly naturally (except in our dreams) and acts as an intermediary symbol while also speaking of caution!

"I like this - the colours and the tactile shapes." - Rick Andrew

"Yes, Gert, Rick's comment is spot on - tactile, bulbous form, with a great backstory. Love it!" - Jeff Rankin

"An intruiging title and backstory to this piece! The theme of sheltering under the shadow of God's wings is one of my favourite scriptures but doesn't include the aspect of flight that your sculpture aims for. The passage that comes to mind is Isaih 40: 28 to 31, ending with the well known 'they shall mount up with wings . . .'" - Caroline Raines
