You turn things upside down, as if the potter
were thought to be like the clay!
Shall what is formed say to the one who formed it,
“You did not make me.”
I fortuitously completed this sculpture on South Africa’s Heritage Day (24th Sept) while Covid 19 was still in full sway. It was also the year that I was blessed to have reached my three score and ten milestone.’ The title of this sculpture references Bob Dylan’s song.
In the sculpture’s thoracic-like cavity there is an oversized egg pregnant with all of ones life experiences that will shape the future if protected and nurtured. And in particular, it also speaks of the role of the significant other (‘if not for you’) that comes into play in many guises, bolstering the identity of the individual. All of this embraces the concept of scenius which in turn should give form to the heritage of the community at large.
On the top there is an altar-like form that could also double up as a seat. This form acknowledges the spiritual dimension of things, while the seat also suggests a state of rest where one can contemplate the gift of life.
If not for you
Winter would have no spring
Couldn't hear the robin sing
I just wouldn't have a clue
Anyway it wouldn't ring true
If not for you.
