Some years ago I saw a photograph, somewhere, of a young man who had just gone through a circumcision ceremony.
As if to emphasise what happened to him during this rite of passage, he was wearing a hat with the very top bit cut off (circumcised?), as depicted in my sculpture of the hat... and to crown it all, the hat had a feather in it!
Rick Andrew writes about 'The Initiate': I’ve seen Xhosa initiates in Grahamstown fresh from their wilderness ordeal strolling gaily along the pavement wearing their new jackets and shoes, and this piece seems to echo that sense of happy celebration. The hat with the feather feels quite jocular to me. The shape of the hat reminds me of the hats worn by the Boer commandoes during the Anglo Boer war.
